Back in school, when we sang Negaraku as the prefect raised the Jalur Gemilang, none of us knew what that piece of fabric meant to us. Hearing the beautiful song of Negaraku brings back memories for most Malaysian students who pursue their studies outside of Malaysia.
We only realized we had taken the solidarity and shared passion for the Jalur Gemilang for granted when we went to a foreign land. I bet most Malaysians studying abroad miss their sense of home the most. While the government and authorities have promised to prosecute offenders, it is critical to educate the public about the Jalur Gemilang’s history and importance.
Today! Let’s boost our patriotism by learning about the basic meaning of every color on our respective Jalur Gemilang.
Before that, did you know that the 14 alternating red and white horizontal stripes of the Jalur Gemilang represent the nation’s 13 member states as well as the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan? Now you know.
Basically, every color has its own meaning and we as Malaysians should at least know the basic knowledge about those colors.
Red usually signifies courage, bravery, and preparedness to face challenges.
White (you know why the font isn’t white, right?) symbolizes purity, sincerity, and seriousness.
Dark Blue represents the unity of multiracial Malaysians.
Yellow symbolizes the sovereignty of the constitutional monarchy
As you can see above, the dark blue canton with a yellow crescent and a yellow 14-point star may be seen in the flag’s top left corner.
Other than the colors, you should also acknowledge that the crescent moon represents Islam, Malaysia’s national religion. The 14-point star, like the stripes, is another symbol of Malaysia’s states and federal areas.
The necessity of civic education in schools must be emphasized. Begin while they are little. Take action at the grassroots level to solve the situation. Let’s all learn about the history and actual meanings of the national flag and how to respect it. Allow the dignity and honor of the Jalur Gemilang to fly high!
